Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a regenerative medicine injection technique that is beneficial for a multitude of injuries. Dr. Sellars is one of the few providers in Georgia who offers this treatment.

The treatment involves a series of injections, using special techniques and natural solutions such as dextrose or saline, which stimulate the body’s healing response by creating a mild inflammatory response. This enhances healing of injured or damaged tissue and kick-starts the body’s healing response. This often leads to reduced pain, increased strength and improved function and performance.

Prolotherapy is especially helpful for ligament, joint and tendon injuries. Prolotherapy increases the tensile strength of these structures, addressing ligament laxity and increasing joint stability. Improving strength and joint stability maximizes a patient’s ability to recover from their injuries perform at a high level. This is useful for hypermobility conditions as well as repetitive sprains, tendon injuries and hypermobility.

Prolotherapy is not the same as Platelet-rich Plasma injections or Stem Cell Therapy. Both of those regenerative therapies are composed of elements obtained from your own body. Steroid injections, which are commonly offered by all Sports Medicine physicians, are also different from prolotherapy. Steroids act as an anti-inflammatory, while Prolotherapy and other regenerative techniques focus on repairing cellular damage.

Prolotherapy is used to treat multiple conditions, including:

  • Degenerative disc Disease

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Hypermobility

  • Ligament laxity

  • Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and other connective tissue disorders

  • Chronic joint pain

  • Injuries of the knee, back, hips and shoulders.
