Bone Marrow Aspirate

Bone Marrow Aspirate is comprised of the patient’s own bone marrow including white blood cells, red blood cells, and growth factor which may help repair damaged cartilage and tissues. The pluripotent cells found in our bone marrow may be beneficial for helping to repair damaged cartilage seen in moderate to severe osteoarthritis and for helping to repair tendon injuries.

Basics about the procedure:

  • Non-surgical

  • Performed in the Office

  • Local anesthetic is used to minimize discomfort of bone marrow harvest (ie, aspiration of bone marrow cells from the patient’s posterior hip region using a needle).

  • The procedure takes one to two hours.

  • Relative rest from aggressive activity for 3 to 7 days.

  • Individualized rehabilitation prescription is provided by physician which starts one to two weeks after the procedure.

  • Follow up visits as directed by the physician.

  • Utilizing Bone Marrow Aspirate is NOT a cure for damaged cartilage or tissue but has been shown to reduce pain and to help repair cartilage and tissues. Therefore it has helped athletes and people with orthopedic injury regain function and optimal performance without the need for surgery.
