Viscosupplement Injections

This injection is typically used to treat ostoearthritis of the knees after failed treatment with more conservative measures. Viscosupplementation consists of one or more intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid which allows for coating and protection of the cartilage of a joint. Hyaluronic acid is a substance typically in the synovial joints of the body. In conditions such as osteoarthritis, the joint has less hyaluronic acid and the fluid is less effective in protecting the cartilage and bone from eventual damage. Viscosupplement injections may help ‘lubricate’ the joint, creating “cushioning” of the joint over time.
